SNOWY HYDRO RELEASES 2024 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT

13/01/2025

Snowy Hydro has released its 2024 Sustainability Report, covering the progress the energy generator and retailer has made in areas such as environmental stewardship, social impact, and understanding and responding to its carbon emissions and climate risks.

Snowy Hydro CEO Dennis Barnes said the report reflects the company’s role in enabling Australia’s transition to renewable energy, while highlighting its progress and ambitions.

“At Snowy Hydro, we understand that sustainability goes beyond fulfilling our environmental commitments,” Mr Barnes said.

“It’s about supporting our people, driving better diversity outcomes and making a positive difference to the communities we serve.

“The 2024 report shows the progress we are making and achievements we are proud of. While we recognise there is still more to do, this report serves as our roadmap, keeping us accountable and focused on delivering even better outcomes for stakeholders and the community in the future,” Mr Barnes said.

Mr Barnes also acknowledged Snowy Hydro’s responsibility as custodian of the water that flows through the Snowy Scheme, highlighting its role in balancing electricity network reliability, with the irrigation needs of farmers and other water users.

Key sustainability achievements in the 2023/2024 financial year include:

  • Producing 3,937 GWh of renewable electricity from our hydro generation assets – enough energy to power around 600,000 homes for a year.
  • Growing our mass market retail brands business to 1.4 million customers, with a focus on delivering authentic, personal customer service.
  • Our retail brand Red Energy recognised with the Customer Satisfaction Award for the 14th year in a row
  • 7,958 students benefitting from Snowy STEM Academy programs
  • Keeping our people safe, reflected in our low Total Recordable Incident Frequency Rate (TRIFR) score
  • Delivering five events of 8-hour peak water flows from Jindabyne reservoir to improve the health of the Snowy River ecosystem
  • Maintaining outstanding reliability across our generation assets, with our hydro generators starting successfully 99.7 per cent of the time, and gas 98.5 per cent of the time, underpinning our ability to contribute to stable electricity supply
  • $557,000 spent through our community giving programs
  • Increasing the proportion of women in senior leadership roles
  • $320,000 of funding for Murray River rehabilitation work to maintain waterflow and prevent erosion

Snowy Hydro is the third largest generator of electricity in Australia by capacity. We can generate 5,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity across eight hydroelectric power stations, three natural gas power stations, and four diesel power stations.

Snowy 2.0 and the Hunter Power Project are set to deliver 2,860MW of additional capacity. This significant boost to the network’s capacity will make a meaningful difference to energy supply reliability, particularly on hot days in summer.

When these fast-start generating assets come online, they will enable further wind and solar generation that can displace more than 33 million tonnes of CO2-e per annum.

This carbon emissions displacement would represent a 28 percent reduction in the National Electricity Market emissions from 2022 levels, and approximately 13 percent of Australia’s 2030 total emissions reduction target.

SNOWY HYDRO RELEASES 2023 SUSTAINABILITY REPORT, EXPANDS WIND FARM DEAL

11/01/2024

Snowy Hydro has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, underscoring the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility, community support, and the ongoing pursuit of clean, sustainable energy solutions.

The report outlines Snowy Hydro’s Sustainability Program, which aligns with the company’s integral role in Australia’s renewable energy future. It highlights three prioritised sustainability opportunities for 2023-24:

  • Understanding and mitigating risks associated with climate change
  • Emissions reduction and facilitating the decarbonisation of the National Electricity Market (NEM)
  • Strengthening relationships with Traditional Owners and communities where we operate

Snowy Hydro is a major contributor to the reshaping of the NEM to support the transition to a cleaner, low-carbon economy. The company aims to be a driver and enabler of least-cost NEM decarbonisation.

Snowy Hydro CEO Dennis Barnes said reliability, security of supply, and supporting a sustainable transition would remain the central considerations behind how the company operates, develops and maintains its nationally critical infrastructure.

“As Australia undergoes significant changes in its energy markets, Snowy Hydro remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering clean, sustainable, and affordable energy, contributing to a brighter and more sustainable future for all,” Mr Barnes said.

“We are already reducing our low emissions intensity profile by investing in new generation technology and materially increased renewable capacity.

“Investments in the Snowy 2.0 and Hunter Power Projects, the Renewable Energy Procurement Program, and the development of green hydrogen capability directly support that purpose.”

Mr Barnes said energy purchased through Snowy’s wind and solar offtakes continued to grow. The offtakes will deliver approximately 5,200 GWh annually and exceed Snowy Hydro’s expected long-term hydroelectric generation.

The new wind and solar generation Snowy Hydro is enabling will displace more than 33 million tonnes of CO2 per annum. This equates to a 28% reduction in NEM emissions from 2022 levels and approximately 13% of Australia’s total emissions reduction target for 2030.

Mr Barnes today also announced the signing of a further 100 megawatts of renewable capacity from Squadron Energy’s Uungula Wind Farm over 10 years.

“This adds to the 200 megawatts over 15 years that Snowy signed with the project in 2022.

“We are proud to continue supporting important projects like Uungula Wind Farm which will produce enough renewable electricity to power more than 220,000 homes, and will prevent more than 560,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.”

Snowy Hydro has developed and sold products within a new environmentally-focused product class for its commercial and industrial customers, which includes some of Australia’s largest shopping centres, universities, banks and property managers.

The 2023 Sustainability Report outlines our commitment to supporting local communities through employment, education and environmental responsibility.

Snowy Hydro actively fosters diversity and inclusion, aiming to increase female representation in the workforce (currently at 42.5%), particularly at senior levels.

Snowy Hydro has a long history supporting the local communities in which it operates. This includes partnerships and sponsorships with not-for-profit organisations, community grants programs, contributing to local infrastructure, and economic investment in communities. Snowy Hydro welcomes Finkel Review

09/06/2017

Snowy Hydro Limited welcomes the support of the Finkel Review of pumped hydro as a key to energy security as it focuses on recommendations aimed at strengthening reliability in the National Electricity Market.

Snowy Hydro CEO Paul Broad said the Snowy 2.0 project would play a key role in both ensuring security of supply and backing up the expected big increase in intermittent supplies – wind and power – in the market.

The report states on p33 that “Battery and pumped hydro storage will be able to support a reliable and secure NEM, as and when they are deployed at scale.”

Mr Broad said the Finkel Review had identified the need to guarantee back-up to any new intermittent power supply projects.

“Snowy 2.0 fulfils the objectives of the Finkel Review on energy security, in that it can uniquely provide the largest scale and affordable storage of renewable energy to support the reliable and secure power supply that is needed for Australia to move safely to a low emissions economy”, Mr Broad said.

“The Finkel review rightly points to the importance of pumped hydro as an essential back-up to intermittent wind and power to protect consumers and business, and ensure we don’t face the catastrophic supply failures that we have seen in South Australia.”

Snowy Hydro also supports market-based mechanisms to achieve the Government’s commitment to climate change targets, as well as stable and long term policy certainty. We will be actively engaging with relevant bodies to implement policies which best meet the energy trilemma of market efficiency, energy security and emission reductions.
