The Snowy Scheme developments

Overview

Learning area: science, HASS
Topics: geography, environment, engineering

Discover the two developments in the scheme; the northern Snowy-Tumut Development, where the power generated here is sent into the NSW energy market and the southern Snowy-Murray Development, where the power is sent into the Victorian energy market.  Both developments are connected by tunnels to the Scheme’s main regulating storage, Lake Eucumbene.

Our proud history

Overview

Learning area: HASS
Topics: citizenship, civics, history

Learn about the many workers who came from war-torn Europe through the Commonwealth Government’s immigration scheme. Over 100,000 men and women from more than 30 countries worked on the construction of the Snowy Scheme. For the first five years of construction, 100’s of workers lived in tents in remote areas of the mountains with very basic living conditions to prepare construction sites for the dams and tunnels. These workers were paramount to the success of the mighty Snowy Scheme.

1953 – Norwegians arriving at the base of the inclined embankment designed to support the down-piped, or penstocks, that would deliver water from the dam to Guthega Power Station.

Snowy 2.0

Overview

Learning area: science
Topics: design, energy, electricity and technologies

In this Module, learn how Snowy 2.0 will play a major role in offering stability in the Australian Energy Market by providing on-demand energy and large scale storage capacity. It will link two existing reservoirs, Tantanagara and Talbingo. At periods of high demand, Snowy 2.0 will generate electricity using this stored water and when the demand for energy is low the water will be pumped back to the upper dam.

Power generation

Overview

Learning area: science
Topics: electricity, engineering, physics

Through our video and learning resources explore how hydro-electricity is generated to produce clean renewable energy. There are eight power stations comprising 33 turbines, with a total generating capacity of 4,100 megawatts. Most of the turbines used in the Snowy Scheme are Francis turbines, which are installed vertically.

Francis turbines have the widest range of pressure applications and are designed with the capability to generate electricity and to pump water.

Water of the Snowy Scheme

Overview

Learning area: science, HASS
Topics: water, electricity, geography

Discover how the rain that falls in the mountains combined with the snow melt is collected, filling up our dams that are used to store the water.  The stored water is then used to generate electricity through our Power Stations and released into the Murray River, the Murrumbidgee River and the Snowy River for irrigation.
