About Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Australia: BBBS Australia is continuing its mission to support at-risk young people in the Tumut region through its evidence based, one-on-one mentoring program. The program connects young people aged 7-17 with volunteer mentors who provide guidance, support, and a safe environment for growth.
Through shared activities such as sports, outings, and simply spending time together, the program helps build the confidence and resilience of the young participants, with the goal of improving mental health and overall wellbeing.
Since launching in July 2022, the Tumut program has grown significantly, with 23 young people benefiting from the program so far.
How Snowy Hydro is helping: Snowy Hydro’s funding will enable BBBS to recruit and train up to 14 additional volunteer mentors, expanding the reach of the program in Tumut and surrounding areas.
With more than a dozen young people currently on their waiting list—and new referrals coming in regularly—this support means more young people will be matched with a mentor sooner, providing them with the guidance and encouragement they need.
Mentoring Coordinator Emma Peacock says: “A funding contribution of this amount is crucial in the sustainability of our work. Big Brothers Big Sisters does not receive regular government funding, so to receive not just financial support, but also the backing and validation of our work by an organisation like Snowy Hydro gives us confidence in a sustainable future.”
